1966 police shooting trial goes to jury

PHILADELPHIA - May 21, 2010

Prosecutors say Officer Walter Barclay died of complications from paralyzing injury he suffered 41 years earlier at the hand of William Barnes.

The defense says Barclay was in three car accidents, had two bad falls from his wheelchair, and was neglected by caregivers, and all those things contributed to his death.

The 74-year-old Barnes already served 16 years in prison on an attempted murder charge for shooting Barclay in 1966.

Common Pleas Judge Renee Cardwell Hughes is giving instructions Friday afternoon to the jury and then deliberations will begin.
