Officer shot in Upper Darby talks about ordeal

UPPER DARBY, Pa. - May 26, 2010

The wounded officer talked during a news conference Wednesday, just days after being shot four times.

One of the bullets passed through his back, fracturing the L3 vertebrae of his spine, Blohm revealed, and lodged in his side. Amazingly, he was not paralyzed. Doctors say they will likely leave that bullet in to avoid risking more damage.

Blohm, 31-year-old who is a 10 year veteran of the force, was shot around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, May 21st.

Authorities say Blohm spotted 27-year-old Marvin Marmolejos with an open container of alcohol and smoking marijuana.

There was a confrontation, and Blohm used his Taser on Marmolejos, to no avail.

Investigators say Marmolejos then pulled a gun and shot Blohm four times. Two of the shots hit the officer in the lower back, once in the left shoulder and once in the hand.

"It was a shock," Blohm said, then described the thoughts in his mind. "I can't believe this guy is pulling a gun on me and try to kill me.... Which he did."

One bullet went through the handcuff holder on his belt. It remains lodged in his lower back. Another hit his bullet proof vest and left a bruise on his upper back.

Blohm returned fire, hitting Marmolejos four times. Despite being shot, Marmolejos took off and Blohm gave chase, calling 911 from his cell phone as he chased the suspect.

He had to use his cell phone because the cord from his police radio was severed by a bullet.

A few blocks away, Marmolejos collapsed.

Marmolejos was treated at the hospital, then sent to jail on one million dollars bail.

Depsite the pain of his wounds, Officer Blohm said he wanted to speak out publicly to thank those who came to his rescue.

"It's been overwhelming and I can't express enough thanks," Blohm said. "It means a lot, and it helps with the recovery process both mentally and physically."
