Pop-up parks may soon pop up

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - May 26, 2010

In South Philadelphia, residents call the intersection of Morris Street, 12th Street, and Passyunk Avenue a not so user-friendly expanse of asphalt.

"No matter which way, I feel like I'm going to get hit," resident Jessica Hunt said.

Donnie Maley is part of a design group called The Planning Collective. It has an idea to improve things and a novel way to fund it that involves a giant soft drink company.

Maley says current locations in the intersection where it is deemed 'no man's land' could be turned into expanded areas known as pop up parks. There would be one in the north and one in the south.

The one in the north would give pedestrians a refuge when crossing the street, and the most larger plaza in south could be along the lines of what New York did to a section of Broadway where it carved out a people space with planters and tables.

"It's become a little Philadelphia thing to sit outside and eat or sit outside and have a cup of coffee," Maley said.

To pay for it, Maley's group found out Pepsi, the soda company, is running an online contest for civic projects. The group has applied for a $50,000 grant.

For the Planning Collective to get the Pepsi money, they have to convince a lot of people to go online and vote.

To get the money, a project has to finish as a top ten vote getter.

As of Wednesday night, it was 85th.

The deadline is the end of the month.
