Cleveland's Huff hit in head by A-Rod's line drive

NEW YORK (AP) - May 29, 2010

Huff was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan for a CT scan, which was negative. The Indians said the 25-year-old left-hander never lost consciousness or experienced memory loss.

"He's doing well, we'll find out more tomorrow," Indians manager Manny Acta said after the Indians' rallied from a big deficit for a 13-11 victory. "He did not have any concussive symptoms right now."

Huff returned to Yankee Stadium by the ninth inning, saw a couple of teammates, showered and took the team bus with his brother, Tim, and their parents.

He received a phone call from Rodriguez, who was going to the hospital after the game but was told to turn around after Huff was discharged.

Rodriguez told Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo in a phone call: "Your heart stops. You want so badly to take it back."

Huff immediately crumpled to the ground and lay motionless on his stomach after Rodriguez's drive hit him and caromed into right field for an RBI double with one out in the third inning.

Trainers from both teams and players on the field ran to the mound. Rodriguez put his hands on his helmet as he approached second. He took a knee behind the mound and slammed his helmet. He remained there with his head bowed for a minute before going into the dugout.

After about 90 seconds, trainers turned Huff onto his back then he was put on a board with a neck brace. He gave a thumbs-up and raised a hand to a huge ovation while being carted off the field.

"It's tough but you gotta kind of set it aside and not let it affect you," first baseman Matt LaPorta said. "It's hard to do when you see a teammate and a friend like that get hit in the head, but I think when he was getting carried off he gave us a thumbs up - and that was a good sign obviously."

Aaron Laffey relieved with runners on second and third after a delay of about 9 minutes and gave up a sacrifice fly to Robinson Cano.

Huff gave up three runs and five hits in 2 1-3 innings. The Indians responded with three runs to tie it 3-all in the top of the fourth, with help from a ball that hit off CC Sabathia's right foot and rolled between first and second to the grass in right field for a single.

Sabathia raised his hands in disbelief, shook his foot and went back to work but appeared to have been spooked by Austin Kearns' hit so soon after Huff's injury.
