Fairleigh Dickinson University's PublicMind finds only one-third of the state's voters have a favorable opinion of the New Jersey Education Association. And 44 percent have an unfavorable view of the organization.
That's a change from a poll released two months ago, when there was an even split in public opinion - and far fewer state residents had any opinion on the group.
The union has protested a reduction in aid to schools.
Christie is calling on teachers to take voluntary wage freezes.
The poll also finds anger that many school superintendents make over $200,000.
