Police: Woman driving drunk with two kids in car

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 1, 2010

Alice VanDyke, 38, was arrested early Tuesday morning in the area of Route 2 and Saint James Church Road in Wilmington.

According to police, an officer pulled over VanDyke for failing to keep her car in its lane on Route 2.

The vehicle stopped and, police say, the officer approached the car to find empty beer cans in the front seat and two girls, ages six and four. Officers say they later learned the girls were VanDyke's nieces.

Police say VanDyke was wanted on outstanding court orders from New Castle County, and her driver's license had been suspended. Police say she also was unable to provide any proof of insurance.

She, and the girls, were taken State Police Troop 6. Once there, police say the girls were playing with a bag of toys they had with them while waiting for their parents to pick them up. That's when the desk officer noticed a clear plastic baggie among the toys.

Police say that bag contained more than 30 grams of suspected marijuana.

Officers say VanDyke stuffed the baggie of suspected marijuana in the toy bag prior to being placed into custody.

Alice Van Dyke was formally charged with the following offenses: two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child Involving DUI (misdemeanor), Possession of Marijuana (misdemeanor), DUI, Driving While Suspended, Failure to Provide Insurance and Improper Lane Change.

After being allowed to sober up, police say VanDyke was released on a $3,000.00 unsecured bond.
