Did big crowds mean big biz at the shore?

WILDWOOD, N.J. - June 1, 2010

It depends on which merchants you ask.

"It wasn't a decline from last year," said Rick Nickles of Quickwater Games on the Wildwood boardwalk. "I'd say it was pretty much spot-on in a lot of ways, and the weather had a lot to do with that. You know you can lose everything if it rains."

"We had some pretty good business. It was off and on but we were pretty busy for most of the weekend," said Susan Ameye of the Supercade Arcade.

At the Snow White Family Restaurant, where they specialize in roast beef, chef Peter Karambilas was just catching his breath.

"Very busy this weekend. It was non-stop, working all the time," he said.

Meanwhile, Victor Amyot of Sunrise Surf Gear says sales this weekend were disappointing.

"A lot of people out on the boardwalk, not so many people coming into the store," Amyot said, adding he worried the economy was to blame.

While we're getting mixed reviews about how boardwalk merchants fared this weekend, everyone is hoping that as we get closer to summer and the crowds grow, so will business.

Sissy Rutkowsky of Shooters Old Time Photos knows customers are watching their wallets.

"I think people are being smarter with their money than I've seen in the past," Rutkowsky said. "They certainly review their pricing and what they get for their money."

You get the picture: saving money never goes out of style.
