Break-in call leads to Hazmat in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, Del. - June 2, 2010

Police were dispatched to 1 Mill Road shortly after 9:00 a.m. for a report of people entering an abandoned processing plant, the former Wilmington finishing plant, to possibly steal copper.

A contractor working on removing equipment from the building in preparation for demolition arrived to work this morning shortly after 9:00 a.m. and spotted three individuals he suspected of attempting to steal copper from the building. He called police, who were advised that the suspects retreated further into the building.

Police were advised that respiratory equipment is needed to enter the building because of hazardous materials inside. Police called the Wilmington Fire Department to the scene to assist them with the proper protective equipment to enter the building to search for suspects.

Police searched the building, then cleared the scene on Wednesday afternoon. It is unclear if anyone was arrested.
