Parenting: Managing your child's stress

June 2, 2010

Child expert Bette Freedson says parents can help manage their youngsters stress levels in three steps:

1. Know the source of the stress
2. Recognize the stress signals
3. Use stress-reducing strategies

So let's talk about those steps. Knowing the source of their stress, means being connected to their world. Experts say stress for a child can come from multiple sources, whether its personal, social even psychological. And the amount of stress often depends on their age, development, temperament and environment.

As for as signs go, obviously stress will show up in their behavior. Take a look at your child's actions - anything different? Are there ongoing changes to their sleeping, eating or playing patterns?

When it comes to strategies, many experts, including Bette Freedson, suggest communicating. That is seeing if your youngster is willing to talk about their feelings. But don't probe. If they don't want to talk don't push it. Just try again later.

It's important to remember that stress is normal even for children, and can be relieved if handled effectively.

Good luck.
