Parenting: Keeping track of children at the beach

June 7, 2010

What do our Action News parents do to keep track of their children when "Down the Shore?"

Penny Davis Moran: "Never take your eye off of them... stick to them like a jellyfish!"

Trish Johnson Hill: "Tag-team with my husband to watch them like hawks!"

Gina Palmonari: "When mine were little I had the leash and we were always down there. Sounds cruel to some but they're 20, 19 and 16 now. It worked!"

Mary Anne Homskie Moore: "I get so amazed at the young ones that are so far away from their parents on the beach... The beach isn't the place to give a little freedom. It helps to have another adult with you... We are total hawks!"

Debbie Sabella Quarino: "My mother used to put the brightest swimsuit on me and make me play right in front of her at all times. If I started to wander, we have to go home:-)"

Michael Young: "There is no question in the matter. We are with them every second!"

Karen Sihler: "I have 10 children and we go to the Jersey Shore every year. I put the same bathing suits on all of the little kids. It makes it much easier to keep track of them and do a head count quite often... We always sit directly behind a lifeguard stand."

Andrew Thompson: "I watch 'em like a Wall Street executive eyes his bonus check!!"

Shannon Durkin-Wade: "We put the hot pink and neon shirts on the kids. Not one of them is allowed in the water by themselves."

Some good ideas from our Action News Facebook friends. I found some excellent ideas (if you are willing to spend a little money) from ABCNews.com. It talks about getting a "safety tattoo," a device with an alarm that goes off if it gets wet (handy for people with pools), and an actual homing device a child can wear, with a range of up to 100 feet.
