New treatments to tackle frizzy hair

June 7, 2010 It seems like such a small thing, but for women blow-drying their hair can be the biggest pain when it comes to getting ready. But there are a couple of treatments that promise to make your hair smooth and silky and dramatically cut-down on blow-drying time, so Action News checked them out.

Danielle O'Driscoll and Tracy Smoger are sick of fighting the frizz! Both ladies rack up countless hours trying to tame their tresses. So Danielle and Tracey agreed to check out two treatments that promise to cut down on styling time and leave their hair smooth, healthy and frizz-free, even at the beach and on the most humid days.

"I'm hoping it will improve the quality of my hair and hopefully I won't have to do so many steps for it to ah look good," said Danielle.

Danielle is trying the Keratin Treatment by Rejuvenol.

"It will make your hair a lot more polished and beautiful healthier looking."

Giovanni Mele of Giovanni and Pileggi Salon says Keratin is not a relaxer but a topical treatment that will last up to 5 months. The application process is long, though, it takes about 3 hours.

First Danielle's hair is prepped with a cleansing shampoo. Then her hair is blow dried and the Keratin is applied. Then Mele blow dries her hair again and uses a hot iron to seal in the treatment. Then Danielle must sit for one hour.

"It's like I had a complete makeover but it's just a hair treatment!"

Danielle was very pleased with the results.

"The overall texture has just improved so much I mean I didn't think my hair was in that much need of help, but now I realize it was."

At Jason Matthews salon, Tracey Smoger is undergoing a treatment called the Brazilian Blowout.

"This one will allow you to maintain some of the body and bounce even if you're starting with a little more curl will allow you to maintain a wave to your hair," he explained. "It is a smoothing treatment more than a straightener."

For the Brazilian Blowout Jason also first washes the hair with a cleansing shampoo. Then he applies the treatment to Tracey's damp hair, blow dries it with a round brush, and seals in the treatment using a flat iron. But unlike the Keratin treatment, the Brazilian Blowout requires no wait time. With this treatment, Jason just rinses Tracey's hair blows it dry and she's done.

"It's amazing it feels like the hair I wished I always had," said Tracey.

Tracey has had the Brazilian Blowout done before and can vouch for how it's changed her routine at home.

"What I like about it, it looks like the stylist just blew it out for an hour and I can do it in five minutes to get that look."

Which treatment is right for you really depends on what your needs are. The Keratin treatment seems to be a heavier treatment, lasting up to six months, depending on how often you wash your hair.

The Brazilian Blowout seems better for women wanting to maintain their natural wave or bounce. The process is a lot quicker as you saw and the results are good up to four months.

Both treatments cost between $300-$350 depending on the salon you choose.
