Police: Twin sisters charged after suicide attempt

UPPER DARBY, Pa. - June 8, 2010

Upper Darby police say the women could have caused an explosion at the apartment building where they tried to die on May 24. Police say seven other people were in the building.

Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said Monday the 55-year-old sisters turned on gas burners without the flames. A resident smelled gas and called authorities, who found the women.

Joanne Gladstone and Janet McGinnis were hospitalized. They were charged upon their release Thursday with recklessly endangering others and risking a catastrophe.

Phone numbers for the sisters could not be found. It's not clear if they have attorneys.
