New effort to clean up Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. - June 8, 2010

It's called the 'Camden Clean Campaign.' The project will focus on seven different zones, beginning in North Camden.

The city has held several cleanups in the past, but Mayor Dana Redd says this one's different. Redd received a $15,000 dollar check from Wachovia Bank and $15,000 match from PNC for shovels, cleaning supplies, paint and other items for the new Camden Clean Campaign.

It will begin in North Camden on June 23rd and continue through the summer. Redd said there's a call for "all hands on deck."

"We'll be having seven cleanups throughout the city of Camden in our seven zones and we're inviting everyone to participate," Mayor Redd said. "This is an effort I'm proud of."

No group can clean up the mess alone, and that includes public works department. But, the mayor hopes that with community input and support she can make a dent in the blight problem.

Bryan Morton of Concerned Citizens of North Camden says this will not be an ordinary cleanup.

"We're boarding up abandoned houses, we're identifying properties that need to be torn down so that the city can then go back and demolish them," Morton said. "We're building community gardens and we're involving residents."
