Man shot by police in NE Phila. identified

NORTHEAST PHILADELPHIA - June 11, 2010

Police say 24-year-old Julius Whitfield of the 1300 block of Wells Street was shot and wounded early Friday morning.

Just before 3:00 a.m., officers responded to a home in the 1400 block of Fanshaw Street for a report of a burglary in progress.

When officers arrived on scene, they were approached by the resident who claimed they saw a light go on in the second floor and thought they saw movement inside the house.

When police enter the house, they say they found Whitfield inside.

Police say Whitfield tried to escape and ran to the kitchen. There, police say, he turned around with a gun in his hand. At that point, one officer discharged his weapon, striking Whitfield in the leg.

He was treated and released from Einstein Hospital and is now in police custody.
