Witnesses failing to report Bucks Co. car break-ins

WARMINSTER, Pa. - June 16, 2010

For now, however, the criminals remain on the loose.

The recent rash of vehicle break-ins in Warminster is catching much of this neighborhood by surprise.

"It's a quiet area. We really don't get too much in the way of violence or break-ins or burglaries in this area," said Jennifer Walker.

Despite that, investigators in Warminster say they've received more than a dozen reports of vehicle break-ins over the past several days.

Police believe the thieves have been waiting until dark, then roam the neighborhoods between Delmont Avenue and Easton Road looking for parked cars with unlocked doors.

"They're getting into the cars and they're stealing iPods, valuables, cash, GPS units," said Chief Mike Murphy.

But what has Chief Murphy most concerned is that several neighbors later admitted to seeing suspicious activity on their block, but did not call 911.

Which begs the question: Why?

"I've been doing this for over 30 years and I really can't give you a reason," Chief Murphy said.

Some folks around here believe it's because there are a lot of senior citizens in this neighborhood who may not be sure of what they're seeing.

"If they saw young kids they may have thought they were grandkids, or older kids coming back to visit or just hanging out," said Carrie Hafter.

Regardless, local authorities are now trying to get the word out to the people of Warminster who see anything suspicious in their neighborhoods.

"If it ticks in the back of your mind 'That doesn't look right,' then they should be calling the police," Chief Murphy said. "Let us check it out."
