You probably enjoy a good steak, at least occasionally. And you probably drink at least a little coffee, right? But would you grill a steak with coffee? You might after reading "Sweet and Savory Union" -- the latest cookbook from Chef Dana Herbert. It's all about combining flavors.
"Some things will hit you all at once... so it's kind of cool," Herbert said.
We caught up with Chef Herbert on a visit to Reading Terminal Market. In the market's kitchen, he whipped up a poached pear salad dressed with a blend of red wine, chocolate, and mustard. Don't knock it before you try it.
There's also a cheesecake that features crabmeat, sauteed onions, and three kinds of exotic mushrooms. It's chef-quality food you can create at home.
Herbert, a University of Delaware grad and former Philadelphia Marriott pastry chef, also has a thriving cake business. Desserts by Dana makes custom cakes for weddings and other occasions. His creativity knows no bounds, but you have to order four to six months in advance.
