Learning self-defense in Delaware

Several Wilmington area martial arts studios have offered free seminars.

Such classes have filled up quickly.

Many women have already registered for one next Wednesday at The Christiana Hilton in Newark at 7:00 p.m.

More information on seminar at Hilton: Check-in will be from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and the class will run from 7:00 to 8:30. Those interested in attending should register ahead of time by emailing:

    Several private instructors and police agencies are offering free courses in response to reports of four sexual assaults across New Castle County this month:

  • ATA Martial Arts in the Astro Shopping Center on Kirkwood Highway will host a free self-defense seminar on Wednesday, June 23 at 6 p.m. The martial arts studio can handle up to 100 participants. Pre-register by calling 738-6466.
  • Law enforcement will be hosting a personal safety seminar on Wednesday, June 23 at the Christiana Hilton, at Churchmans Road and Continental Drive in Stanton. Registration will be from 6:30 to 7 p.m. Class will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Pre-register by e-mailing: Jeff.Whitmarsh@state.de.us
  • Trinity Tactical USA is offering a free course June 24 from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Christiana Fire Company, Station 12, 2 E. Main St. in the village of Christiana. Call 355-1772 to register.
  • American Karate Studios in the Polly Drummond Shopping Center in Newark is offering a free one-hour course June 24 at 7:30 p.m. Two other classes are full. Call 737-9500 to reserve a spot.
  • New Castle County police will host two personal safety presentations this month and next at police headquarters on U.S. 13 in Minqudale. The classes, to be held from 6:30 -8 p.m. on June 25 and again July 15, will teach prevention techniques and strategies to minimize or eliminate opportunities for victimization.
