Investigators say there have been five separate incidents recently where two men have been using the counterfeit cash in the Wayne Business District.
The first incident occurred on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the Main Line Jazz Festival on N. Wayne Avenue where one man presented the $100.00 bill for an item less than $20.00 in value. The man was given change, and it was only later that the merchant realized the $100 bill was counterfeit.
The remaining four incidents occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 15, 2010 in which four businesses in the 100 block of E. Lancaster Avenue in Wayne were targeted with the counterfeit $100 bills.
Both suspects are described as Hispanic men. One man was about 5'2" tall with a mustache, wearing khaki shorts and a blue t-shirt. The other man was about 5'5" tall weighting 140 lbs. He was wearing plaid shorts, a t-shirt, cap and glasses.
Police say, at all businesses where the bills were passed, the suspects purchased a single low-value item, costing $10.00 to $20.00. There were seven serial numbers used on all of the $100.00 bills passed. The serial numbers are:
HP 62956999A
AB 19731215T
AU 71635065A
DA 26825037A
HB 98655714B
HB 89075039K
CG 11715368A
Police say the counterfeit bills did not have a United States Treasury security strip or water mark and appeared to be printed on bleached paper, producing thinner weighted feeling to the counterfeit currency.
