Motorcyclist crashes into SUV

CLAYMONT, Del. - June 19, 2010

The crash occurred today at around 8:00 p.m. on northbound I-495 in the area of Holly Oak Road when 40-yaer-old Michael Kalinsky of Schwenksville, Pa. was driving his GMC SUV.

Police say Kalinsky made a lane change from the center lane into the left lane after seeing approximately five motorcycles approaching the rear of his vehicle at a high rate of speed.

After Kalinsky entered the left lane of travel, his vehicle was struck in the rear by a Suzuki motorcycle being operated by 27-year-old Shamayim Cannon of Wilmington. The force of the crash caused Cannon to be thrown into the rear of the SUV.

Cannon, who was wearing a helmet, was flown by helicopter to Christiana Hospital with multiple injuries. The injuries, however, are not considered life threatening.

The wreckage of the motorcycle caught fire and came to a rest approximately 100 yards past the crash scene.

The investigation is ongoing.

Northbound I-495 was closed for approximately 50 minutes as the crash was investigated.
