Randy S. James, Jr. of Blackwood, New Jersey was arrested on Wednesday night. He is charged with robbery, aggravated assault with a weapon and attempted homicide.
Police say James confessed to the crime. He was sent to prison on $500,000 bail.
The stabbing happened around 3:00 a.m. on June 11th.
Police say the 28-year-old cab driver, Shaun McDonel, who works for the Lindenwold Cab Company, picked up James in the ShopRite parking lot on Blackwood-Clementon Road on Gloucester Township.
They arrived at "The Club" apartment complex in the Locust Grove section of Deptford Township, where James allegedly asked McDonel what the fare was, and then stabbed him.
Shaun's mother, Susan, earlier told Action News that her son does not understand why this happened.
"What Shaun keeps saying is, he doesn't understand, the guy didn't ask him for the money, he asked Shaun what the fare was, Shaun told him, and the guy just reached around and slit Shaun's throat," Susan said.
Susan McDonel says her son told her the attacker left the cab after the stabbing and returned to take about $100.
McDonel called for help on his radio as the attacker ran off.
McDonel survived the attack and is recovering.
