Parents arrested after children found home alone

HAMILTON TWP., N.J. - June 24, 2010

At around 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday, Hamilton Township Police responded to the 4500 block of Concord Drive in Mays Landing for a report of several children left unattended.

Officers found three children inside, a six-year-old, a three-year-old and a four-month-old baby.

The six-year-old explained to officers that he was in charge of watching the other children while his parents were at work.

Investigators say several attempts were made to contact the parents, but they could not be reached.

Then, around 8:00 a.m., police say the mother of the children, Telicia Akoto, 31, returned home. She was arrested, as was her husband, 49-year-old Samson Akoto.

They were charged with Child Abandonment. They were release on their own recognizance and will appear in court.

The Akotos did not want to speak to Action News about the allegations against them on Thursday afternoon.

The Division of Youth and Family Services is also conducting an investigation.
