Teen struck by car has legs amputated, still critical

HOLMESBURG - June 27, 2010

At around 12:00 p.m., 15-year-old Gioanna Romano was walking with her mother in a shopping center at Frankford Avenue and Welsh Road when police say an elderly woman lost control of her car and hit Gioanna.

According to authorities, the woman was pulling into a handicapped parking spot, lost control of her vehicle, accelerated and then struck Gioanna.

Gioanna's family tells Action News that the woman pinned Gioanna against a wall.

Gioanna was rushed to Frankford Torresdale Hospital where she had to have both legs amputated.

She was then transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in extremely critical condition.

Gioanna's father, Tom, tells Action News Gioanna recently graduated middle school and received a silver medal for academic achievement.

Police are investigating.
