Philly students eliminated from $10M auto contest

PHILADELPHIA - June 29, 2010

Two vehicles made by the West Philly Hybrid X Team failed to get the equivalent of 67 miles per gallon, the standard required to advance to the next stage.

Team leader Simon Hauger says the students' modified Ford Focus hybrid might have met the benchmark had it not been for a snafu with the charger.

The West Philadelphia auto academy was the only high school to advance that far. The team bested companies and universities but was eliminated Friday at Michigan International Speedway.

The X Prize will be awarded in September to teams that create fuel-efficient, production-ready vehicles that get the equivalent of 100 mpg.
