Mrs. Fixit: Green Painting Choices

July 17, 2010

When you're looking for green choices in paints you want to look for one with a low or zero voc rating. These volitile organic compounds are the solvents and vapors typically found in paint that are not great for you or the environment, so look for a green certified product.

You can also find paint cans that are made from recycled material. Another good thing about these paints is that they're low or no odor so they're easier to use as well.

Don't let your green choices stop with your paint though. You can find caulk, paintbrushes, rollers and roller trays that are made of recycled or sustainable materials like bamboo handles on your brushes. Some companies even package their products in eco friendly packaging.

As far as clean up goes, for water based paints, a mild dish soap will work just as well as a chemical cleaner. Plus, did you know if you wet your brush before you start painting it will hold the paint better and clean up easier in the end using less water in the long run.

And don't forget your dropcloths, opt for a reusable canvas cloth or a biodegradable plastic cloth each time you need one.

So help do your part and look for eco friendly products. I'm Mrs. Fixit and it's just that simple!
