Pleasantville residents want pleasantness back

PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. - June 30, 2010

Police tell Action News that around 1:23 p.m. two cars, one heading north and one heading south on Route 9 stopped in the intersection of Park Avenue.

There, people inside the cars started shooting at each other.

Multiple shots were fired, police say, and both cars were riddled with bullet holes.

66-year-old George Barringher was standing outside his Park Avenue home when one of the gunmen was firing wildly. Bullets began ripping into everything around Barringher including his arm.

"It all started happening really fast just then and something struck me in my arm. I happened to look down and see this big hole," Barringher said.

Blood streamed onto his porch railing as Barringher made for his front door.

His sister called 911. Clara Barringher is thankful her brother's life was spared, but she says she is sick of what is happening to this once pleasant small town.

"Something's going to have to be radically dealt with in order to do away with the violent crime that's going on, particularly, on my street," Clara said.

Neighbors think drugs and gang rivalries are fueling the mayhem.

Last month, a man was shot and killed four doors away.

Police say at least 17 people have been shot in this town since January.

Several suspects in today's incident fled on foot in the area of Park Avenue and Broad where one man was shot and another man broke his leg.

Pleasantville Police Chief Duane Comeaux has repeatedly asked for the public's help in finding those pulling the triggers.

"Broad open daylight, a lot of people had to see something," Comeaux said.

A local church next week will begin 7 days of 6 p.m. vigils in an effort to call attention to the escalating violence in Pleasantville.
