60-year-old Gerald Kelly, of the 300 block of Shadeland Avenue in Drexel Hill, was arrested on June 24. He was arraigned on charges of simple assault and harassment.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred on June 15 - just four days before the end of the school year.
According to police, Kelly was exiting the Shadeland Avenue Pharmacy, located on Garrett Road when he exchanged words with a student at Drexel Hill Middle School who was sitting on the step outside.
Police say the boy identified Kelly as the crossing guard at his school, then called the man 'fatboy' or 'fatman.' The 6'4", 200-pound crossing guard then allegedly started to kick at the victim - putting his foot on his chest then his neck.
Police superintendent Michael Chitwood says the victim hit his head on the sidewalk during the assault, causing a lump on the back of his head.
At least two bystanders witnessed the assault.
Chitwood says Kelly has a criminal history of misdemeanor charges of assault, terroristic threats and theft.
Kelly was off duty at the time of the alleged assault.
