Ex-kingpin sentenced to 17 years in federal prison

PHILADELPHIA - July 1, 2010

A federal judge granted 36-year-old Benjamin Ton the reduced sentence on Wednesday. Prosecutors say Ton recorded phone calls with suppliers and customers and helped identify a gang member who was later convicted of murder.

Defense attorney Elliot Cohen says Ton's cooperation had "domino effect" on other defendants who pleaded guilty since Ton's 2004 arrest.

Authorities say Ton smuggled nearly 10 tons of marijuana and hundreds of thousands of Ecstasy pills from Canada to the Philadelphia area between 2002 and 2004.

Besides the drug proceeds, Ton was ordered to surrender $24 million in money laundering proceeds and his home in Sicklerville, N.J.
