The team made that announcement Thursday afternoon. It was not clear when the surgery would be performed.
The procedure will be performed by Dr. Andrew J. Weiland at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City.
Utley, 31, was placed on the disabled list on June 29 with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament of the right thumb. It is not known yet how long Utley could be out.
He originally was hurt on June 28th against the Reds while trying to stretch a single into a double in the fourth inning.
In 72 games this season, Utley is batting .277 with a .383 on-base percentage, 11 HR, 37 RBI and 49 runs scored.
He extended his on-base streak to 15 games on Monday prior to suffering the injury.
Utley is leading the fan voting for a starting spot in the All-Star game later this month.
