Violent start to July in Philly

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - July 3, 2010

In North Philadelphia overnight, police say a 23-year-old male was shot once in the forehead in the 2800 block of Ringold Street. The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital where he is in extremely critical condition. Police found 11 shell casings in the highway while conducting their investigation. There is no word on what sparked this shooting.

Also overnight, police say 19-year-old Riquan Westbrook was shot and killed while riding a bicycle in South Philadelphia.

26-year-old Benjamin Tucker died after he was shot in Olney at about 9 p.m. Friday. Police say three men tried to abduct Tucker in the 400 block of West Ashdale Street. During the attempted abduction, a struggle took place and the man was shot multiple times. Police are still searching for the three suspects who fled in a Jeep Cherokee that police later recovered.

Earlier Friday, a 35-year-old man died after being involved in a fistfight in North Philadelphia.

Shortly after 5 a.m. Friday, 28-year-old Kevin Longeran was shot in his Port Richmond home and later died. An hour earlier, a 28-year-old man was shot in North Philadelphia and died at the scene.

Late Thursday, a triple shooting in an Olney bar killed 45-year-old Leslie Delzingaro, of Dresher, Montgomery County, and wounded two others. That afternoon, in the first of the apparently unrelated murders, 21-year-old Derrick Holley was shot and killed in Logan.
