Philadelphia soldier killed in Afghanistan

PHILADELPHIA - July 6, 2010

Pfc. David A. Jefferson of Philadelphia was an Army Combat Medic assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.

The 23-year-old entered the Army in July 2008 and arrived at Fort Campbell, KY. in February 2009.

He died when his unit was attacked by insurgents using an improvised explosive device in Kandahar.

According to officials, 21 soldiers from Fort Campbell were killed in Afghanistan last month.

Jefferson was an Army Combat Medic who entered the Army in July 2008.

Jefferson's awards and decorations include: National Defense Service Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Army Service Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; and Weapons Qualification: M4, expert.

Jefferson is survived by his wife, Darniece T. Melton-Jefferson; a son, Ian of Philadelphia; and his father, James M. Lyles of Columbia, S.C.

The military also announced the death of Spc. Louis Fastuca of West Chester. He died in an insurgent attack on Monday in Afghanistan.
