Pyro company owner blames firework for injuries

PALMYRA, Pa. - July 7, 2010

VIDEO: See the Palmyra, Pennsylvania fireworks mishap that injured 11.

Kimmel Schaefer Jr. says a faulty firework failed to shoot off properly, causing an explosion on the ground that knocked down other fireworks and fired them into the crowd at Sunday's Independence Day celebration in Palmyra.

Seventeen-year-old Tyler Weaver was the most seriously injured spectator. He underwent surgery Tuesday to apply skin grafts to his legs.

Schaefer says his company likely set off more than 1,000 similar fireworks in the week leading up to the mishap but just one failed to detonate properly.

A state police fire marshal says the incident was an accident and no charges will be filed.
