Soldier from West Chester killed in Afghanistan

PHILADELPHIA - July 7, 2010

The Department of Defense says 24-year-old Spc. Louis R. Fastuca, of West Chester, died Monday at Abdulhamid Kalay, Afghanistan.

Insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Camp Ederle, Italy.

According to a release from the military, Fastuca enlisted in the US Army on 20 April 2006 at age 20. He was assigned to Hotel Company 1st BN, 3rd IN DIV. Upon completion of his tour with the Honor Guard SPC Fastuca reported to Delta Company 1-503d IN (ABN), where he served as an Infantryman in 2nd Platoon.

While deployed to Wardak Province, Afghanistan, he completed over 125 missions as an Infantryman in support of Operation Enduring Freedom X.

  SPC Fastuca's awards and decorations include the Purple Heart (Posthumously recommended), the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon (Posthumously recommended), the NATO Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge (Posthumously recommended), and the Parachutist Badge.

Officials also announced the death of Pfc. David Jefferson, 23, of Philadelphia. He died on July 2nd in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
