The recent heat wave has claimed the life of an elderly man in eastern Pennsylvania.

The Lehigh County coroner said Thursday that 89-year-old Edward Pilch died of hyperthermia at his home in Whitehall.

Coroner Scott Grim says it is the first local death related to the heat wave.

Temperatures in Allentown hit 99 degrees on Wednesday, breaking the record of 97 for the date set in 1988.

The heat wave is also blamed for the death of a 92-year-old Philadelphia woman who was found in her home on Monday.
