Police: Man alleges robbery was a prank

WILMINGTON, Del. - July 11, 2010

The incident happened on Saturday July 10, 2010 inside the Quick Mart, located at 101 North Maryland Avenue in Wilmington.

State Police say a 51-year-old woman approached the cash register with several items when she was accosted from behind by 31-year-old Michael W. Coleman Jr.

Coleman allegedly reached around the victim's neck in a headlock-type of maneuver then held a knife to the her throat. He then shouted, "this is a robbery, give me all you money."

A struggle ensued between the two and the victim was able to free herself.

The clerk told Coleman to stop playing around, to which Coleman responded that he was just playing around.

The victim paid for her items and left the store. Coleman allegedly remained inside the store for a brief period of time before leaving.

Coleman was later arrested in the rear of the Quick Mart. After reviewing surveillance video of the incident, police prepared the following charges against Coleman:

  • Attempted Robbery First Degree
  • Kidnapping 2nd Degree
  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon during the Commission of a Felony
  • Possession of a Deadly Weapon by a Person Prohibited
  • $20,000 cash bond remanded to Howard R. Young Correctional Institute
