Special program to help kids learn bike riding

July 12, 2010 For some kids and their parents it can be a real struggle if a child with special needs can't ride a bike. It may make them feel even more different than their peers. But a camp called "Lose the Training Wheels" is helping those kids to gain confidence, a sense of accomplishment and independence.

You would never know that 5 days prior to this, 9-year-old Sophia Pigeon couldn't ride a 2-wheel bike. In fact her mom says she was scared to death.

"She was gripping those handle bars, serious face, not enjoying herself at all," explained Marisa Pigeon.

Sophia has dyspraxia, which affects her motor coordination and balance. Marisa was just about out of ideas for Sophia when she found "lose the training wheels" day camp.

"I thought 'okay this is our last shot'."

The 5-day camp is designed for children with special needs to teach them how to ride using these specially designed models called "roller bikes". The back wheel has been replaced with a roller, instead of the conventional extra 2 training wheels. It allows the rider to get the feel of the bike gradually.

"We can then begin to change out that rear roller so that it tapers more and simulates a more conventional bicycle," said instructor Sharon Colantonio.

This gives the rider the feel of the bike's tipping motion. The roller, plus the help of volunteers as spotters and constant encouragement is the secret to the camp's success.

"Approximately 80% of them will be riding a 2-wheel bicycle by the end," said Sharon.

Marisa can't believe Sophia's progress.

"I think it's giving her so much confidence you know she's doing something she didn't think she could do."

Tracy Hawkins agrees. Her 16-year-old daughter has Down syndrome and riding a bike was something that seemed out of Jenna's reach.

"She's thrilled I don't think she ever thought that she would be able to do it."

Once the 5-day program is over the practice and encouragement continues for these kids at home with their families.

Another "Lose the Training Wheels" camp is coming to Philadelphia. It will be held at St. Joseph's University August 9th through the 13th. The cost is $175.
