Who killed Gilberto Velazquez?

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - July 17, 2010 "After his daughter was born, he was trying very hard, but he was still always in the streets," Awilde said.

20-year-old Gilberto Velazquez had to make a late-night run to the store on Monday June 8, 2009.

"He was supposed to be going to Rite Aid, I talked to him about 11:45 and that was it, he said he was going to Rite Aid to get some stuff," said Awilde.

During his walk, Awilde says Gilberto encountered someone on the 2600 block of North Wendle Street in North Philadelphia. A short time later Gilberto was shot to death.

"People in the street down Marshal Street said that they saw someone running down the street, but didn't know where the shot came from," Awilde said.

At about 2:30 a.m. police responded to a call for a "person with a gun". That's when they found Gilberto's body. Awilde is convinced her son knew the shooter.

"My son would never have stopped and talked to no one he didn't know," Awilde said.

There is a $2,000 reward for anyone with information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible.

"Someone just come forward, make sure this doesn't happen to anybody else's kid," Awilde said.
