Free gowns for military brides-to-be

OVERBROOK - July 17, 2010

She's traveled from Washington D.C. to take advantage of Brides Across America, a national charity that, through local shops, provides free wedding gowns to military brides.

Amanda and Marine Sgt. Brian Henexson got married quickly at a courthouse before he deployed to Afghanistan, but they're planning a more formal ceremony in the spring.

"I think it's wonderful because a lot of people don't have the money and time to get a nice dress that they dream of and sometimes they don't get a chance to have that dream wedding. So I'm hoping that works out for me and all things planned and he comes home safe and soon," Etamadi said.

To qualify for a free wedding gown, brides must be engaged, be on active duty themselves, or have a fiancé on active duty either in Iraq or Afghanistan.

22-year-old Kristina Bouchard drove 6 hours from upstate New York to the Philadelphia Bridal Company Bridal Loft, located on N. 63rd Street in Philadelphia's Overbrook section. Bouchard hoped to find a dress for her upcoming wedding to Army Combat Engineer William Sivers, who heads to Iraq at the end of August.

"I know I probably won't have enough money to buy my wedding dress, so when my friend posted this on my Facebook I called them the next day," Bouchard said.

Bridal Loft owner Debra Butler is happy to be a part of the program.

"I feel like I'm doing my part a little, just giving back because the troops give so much," Butler said.

The giveaway gowns are mostly samples and overstocks, some worth thousands of dollars. That's money military brides won't have to spend on their special day.
