Fire at Norristown nursing facility causes evacuations

NORRISTOWN, Pa. - July 18, 2010

Just before 9:00 p.m. Sunday, the Norristown Fire Department was called out to the report of a fire at Towne Manor West nursing facility on the 200 block of East Johnson Highway.

The elderly residents were evacuated and sent to temporary housing. Also, several SEPTA buses were dispatched to the scene so the residents could sit on the air conditioned buses and keep cool.

Officials say the facility can house 119 people.

There is no word on any injuries.

Firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control before 11:00 p.m.

SEPTA buses were dispatched to the scene to hold those evacuated in air conditioning until an interim facility is found.
