Firefighters were called to the Carversville Christian Church, on the 3700 block of Aquetong Road, shortly after 11 Sunday night.
Fire crews had to bring in extra water to help fight the blaze.
Investigators are looking at the steeple area as a possible cause. They say it may have started as an electrical fire in the bell area.
The fire caused severe damage to the choir area and steeple of the church. There was also smoke and water damage throughout the remainder of the building.
Fire crews were on location for a majority of the evening and early morning hours.
