Power goes out at high-rise for seniors in Phila.

UNIVERSITY CITY - July 22, 2010

They were without electricity since early Thursday morning. The fire department and the Salvation Army arrived to help make sure everyone was okay.

A generator arrived on the scene, and the hope was that they could have the air back on by dinner time.

PECO officials tell Action News they are having trouble finding the problem that caused this outage.

3,200 customers were affected by an outage that hit around 1:30 a.m. By Thursday afternoon most customers were back on, but those in the dark included the University Square Complex high-rise at 3901.

It includes 440 independent living units.

"I woke up because it was hot. It woke me up because there was no air conditioning," said resident Shirley Carter.

"The T.V. went off, the radio, the clock - everything went off," said Richard White.

Management said it has knocked on doors and everyone is accounted for, including those who are bed-ridden.

Many residents congregated under shade trees out front and waited for the air to come back on.

Next door, the social security office was also in the dark, and officials were advising customers to use the phone or web.

At "A Green Thing" flower shop, owner Connie Lee said she couldn't take phone orders and was worried about her refrigerated flowers.

"My business is shut down for the day. We have a cooler full of flowers, and that's my next concern," Lee said.

By 8:00 p.m., mangement told Action News power was fully restored in the high-rise.
