Joseph Cooper, 49, of the 400 block of East Main Street in Lansdale, was hit on the tracks parallel to South Line Street.
A witness told police that he saw Cooper running alongside a SEPTA train when, for some reason, he ran in front of the train.
The engineer applied the emergency brakes, but it could not be stopped in time.
Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into this accident continues.
