Pedestrians deaths on the rise in Delaware

DOVER, Del. - August 9, 2010

According to the Delaware Office of Highway Safety, 16 pedestrians have died in traffic-related crashes this year. That's three times higher than the number of pedestrian deaths this time last year.

Seventy-five percent of the fatalities this year happened in New Castle County, with most occurring on or near the areas of Routes 7 and 13 in low light or dark conditions.

In almost every case, statistics show the pedestrian was at fault. Most often, the pedestrian stepped into the path of a car and did not sure a crosswalk or marked intersection.
