NJ firefighters rescue horse in ditch

HARDING TOWNSHIP, N.J. - August 12, 2010

Mare Olsen spotted the legs of her 26-year-old Trakehner horse named Lyra sticking up in the air at her Harding Township farm on Wednesday.

The horse, which weighs 1,400-pounds, had no room to turn herself in the 4-foot-deep trench.

Green Village Fire Chief Kevin Doherty says firefighters first had to remove enough dirt so Lyra could lie on her side.

Doherty says firefighters used straps and inflatable air bags traditionally used to right overturned cars to lift her back on her feet.

The horse is doing well.
