Google Street View shows "dead" girl; causes stir

August 12, 2010

People have been known to stage poses or events whenever they know a Google Street View vehicle is coming around to take photos of their neighborhoods. Now, what appears to be an honest accident is creating headlines in Great Britain. A photo shows a girl lying in the middle of the road, and many viewers worry that the girl is injured or, even worse, dead.

The girl, who is identified by the Daily Mail online as ten-year-old Azura Beebeejaun. She said she didn't know anything about the Google Street View car coming through her neighborhood. She was simply playing with a friend when she fell and thought it would be funny to play dead for a while.

So, Beebeejaun lie in along the roadway at the same time the Google Photo vehicle came driving through.

If you check out the Google map, you can see that Beebeejaun stayed in that position as the Google car continued down her street, snapping pictures all the while. Those pictures are then strung together to create the 3-D view of her neighborhood.

The photos were actually taken last summer and updated to the Google Street View site in March.

Google does have a policy to have certain images removed from its Street View files, but there's no word from the company if anyone has requested to have these pictures removed according to the Daily Mail.

In months past, Google has come under increasing pressure from lawmakers in the U.S. and other countries about how private information is handled.
