Paterson police say the incident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Friday, when a 19-year-old woman parked the SUV and got out of the vehicle.
When she realized it was moving forward, she and the victim attempted to hold the SUV back while a 64-year-old man who lives at the complex got in and tried to apply the brake. But he apparently stepped on the accelerator, causing the SUV to hit the victim and go into a nearby apartment.
The woman, who was trapped underneath the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The names of those involved were not released. And it wasn't clear whether the younger woman and the man were injured.
The accident remains under investigation.
