Manhole explosions plague Atlantic City

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - August 18, 2010

Manhole covers blew in the air for the third day in a row Tuesday.

Fire Chief Dennis Brooks says a 200-pound cover shot 10 feet in the air trailed by a yellowish-orange arc of electricity near him on Tuesday.

Firefighters say all of the manholes that have exploded since Sunday contained electrical equipment.

Brooks says an electrical short from one of the underground utility boxes apparently caused the arc. The fire chief says the resulting electrical explosion created a deafening boom.

No one has been injured.
