The crash occurred on Barley Mill Road near the Tatnall School on Sunday afternoon.
Police say the man tried to maneuver a Nissan Altima around a downed tree that was in the road, but he lost control of car.
That's when police say the driver's side of the car hit the pole. The man was taken to Christiana Hospital with severe head trauma and is listed in critical condition.
