Teen football player dies after tackle injury

UPPER DARBY, PA. - August 31, 2010 In Upper Darby, those fears have turned into unspeakable tragedy with the death of Quadaar White. For these folks, grief is truly piling on.

Classmates of Quadaar could not contain their emotions outside Children's Hospital of Philadelphia after learning the 15-year-old had died.

White was injured on an Upper Darby football field a week ago. Teammates say Quadaar was playing defense and went to make a tackle when he suffered a crushing blow.

Teammates say Quadaar went to low in the tackle and hit his neck and dropped to the ground. They said he was having trouble breathing, and was talking low and didn't seem to understand those around him. They said once the paramedics arrived he had stopped breathing forcing rescuers to perform CPR.

Friends and family say it appears Quadaar died from a head and spinal cord injury, but details are not being released by the family. His parents are said to be reeling from the loss but his grandmother spoke briefly outside the hospital.

"It's devastating to me right now but I'm trying to be strong for my daughter, for the family, you know we have all the support from all the children, his coaches, the school," said Valerie Ortiz.

Quadaar had a passion for football and basketball. Friends say he was a tremendous athlete and his dream was to one day play on the gridiron in college.
