One dead in two car crash in New Castle County

PIKE CREEK, Del. - October 4, 2010

It happened around 9:12 a.m. Monday in the area of Stoney Batter Road near Mill Creek Road.

When emergency personnel arrived, they located the two cars in the roadway with heavy damage.

A 69-year-old man, Robert J. Hartman, Jr., was pronounced dead at the scene. Police say he was wearing his seatbelt.

The driver of the other car, a 72-year-old man, suffered only minor injuries. Police say he was wearing his seatbelt and his airbag deployed.

The investigation has revealed Hartman was traveling on Stoney Batter Road toward Mill Creek Road when he lost control of his Honda as he entered a left curve in the roadway.

His vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines and began to slide sideways directly into the path of a Subaru Legacy, driven by the 72-year-old.

The Subaru then impacted the passenger side of the Honda.
