Over 60 cars hit with chemical in South Phila.

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - October 26, 2010

Police say more than 60 vehicles were hit by some sort of chemical, possibly paint thinner, in the 200 and 300 blocks of Jackson and Wolf streets.

The vandalism happened sometime overnight, police said. There is no word yet on any suspects in this case.

Surveillance video released on Tuesday showed someone spraying the chemical on cars from the driver's side window.

The substance left paint peeled and deep grooves in the metal of the cars.

Residents are livid.

"They must be animals, whoever these people are," said Kelly Link.

"I came around this morning and I see police here and I looked at my car and they said it was acid there," said Dottie Hall. When asked who would do something like this, Hall said "Mean people."

One resident, John Behlau, said, about three months ago, someone slashed tires in the same area.

"I think we got a bunch of kids with no respect for anything," Behlau said.

Some people told Action News that, they believe, this vandalism may be connected to an ongoing turf battle between teenagers.

The acid attacks occurred in the same area where a 20-year-old was shot and killed in a robbery attempt last week. His funeral was held Tuesday.
